Women’s bodies are as diverse as their personalities, and Cheyenne Women’s Imaging Pavilion has the right imaging technology for every woman’s unique health needs. While mammography is still the cornerstone of regular screenings for breast health, there are supplementary technologies that can be used to help get a complete image of your health.

You may have heard some of these words thrown around, but here’s a quick survey of medical imaging technologies. Remember: knowledge is power. The more you know, the more you can be proactive about staying healthy.

Mammograms

Mammograms use x-rays to take two different views of each breast. Mammography is the most common and the most appropriate screening and diagnostic imaging technology for breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms and breast clinical exams beginning at age 40. Other factors, like a strong family history or gene mutation, may cause doctors to recommend regular mammograms beginning at an earlier age. Check out our tips on preventing the pre-mammogram jitters.

Breast Ultrasound

Ultrasounds use sound waves rather than radiation to investigate body tissue. This imaging technology can be used by doctors to evaluate abnormalities found during physical exams or mammography screenings. Breast ultrasounds are sometimes recommended in combination with mammograms for women with particularly dense breast tissue, such as breast-feeding mothers.

Breast MRI

There are a lot of myths about MRIs, but we’re here to give you the facts. MRIs use radio waves to create very detailed cross-sectional images of your body. Breast MRIs are sometimes recommended by doctors in order to investigate suspicious areas found during a mammogram, or to get a closer look at cancerous breast tissue. MRIs may also be recommended for women who are at a very high risk, or women who cannot choose conventional mammography, such as those with breast implants. A breast MRI may not be necessary if a breast ultrasound is done. Of course, if a breast MRI is right for you, you can rest assured that Cheyenne Women’s Imaging Pavilion has the best MRI technology here for you.
